I recently had the pleasure of photographing Ninachella; the yearly birthday bash of my good friend, Nina Cataldo. This year was an extra special occasion, as it also served as a going away party before she sets sail with Peace Boat in the coming days.
Rather than my usual posed portraits, event photography requires as little interaction as possible in order to capture the genuine energy of the scene. This can be tough to do in a tiny space. From the dimly lit outdoor roof deck where most of the party-goers spent their time, it’s impossible to miss the camera’s flash going off. When this happens, it’s a natural response to want to pose for the photo. Thankfully, as the night went on, people got used to the camera being around and were able to act naturally. Of course, squirt guns filled with vodka also helped everyone to relax a bit.
Later in the night, Nina’s band, (the) ocean and i, took the stage for a live performance. Featuring one of the most clever guitar mods I’ve ever seen, (the) ocean and i are a mix of melancholy synth rock one moment, and high-energy hair whipping the next. With frontman Nayokenza at the helm, this band is anything but predictable, and a breath of fresh air in the all-too-often overly-produced Tokyo pop music scene. Be sure to check them out.
